LEARNING STORY

A learning story is a narrative that captures a meaningful moment of learning, highlighting what the child did, what learning was taking place, and why it matters. It focuses on the child’s strengths, interests, and dispositions while showing how educators observe, interpret, and extend learning. In the following learning story, I document a moment of pegboard exploration that reveals the child’s curiosity, problem‑solving, and fine‑motor development, and reflects my role in supporting their learning journey.

I selected this learning story for my portfolio because it reflects my philosophy of teaching and learning as an adventurous journey, where the child is the Explorer and I am the Guide supporting their discoveries. In this experience, Child A engaged deeply with the pegboard materials, demonstrating curiosity, persistence, and emerging fine‑motor coordination. The pegboard acted as a rich Landscape, offering open‑ended opportunities for exploration and problem‑solving.

After documenting the learning process, I collaborated with my peers and mentoring educator to reflect on Child A’s strategies, developmental strengths, and possible next steps. We also engaged in a meaningful discussion with our professor, exploring multiple worldviews and considering how diverse perspectives shape children’s learning. These conversations strengthened my reflective practice and informed how I plan future experiences. I chose this story because it provides authentic evidence of learning while maintaining confidentiality and clearly demonstrates my philosophy in action.
